“ A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner struck me as very sad. The main theme of the story is the relationship between the past and the present in Emily Grierson, the protagonist. Her father robs her from many of life’s necessities. She misses out of being a normal woman, and her ability to be happy. Emily’s cold and stuck up behavior is a result of her upbringing but her heart craves for companionship. Miss Emily lives for many years as a recluse, as a result of her surroundings. She refuses to accept the passage of time throughout her life, keeping everything the same.
Her father lack of desire to move on into the future and his old fashioned ways kept Emily away from changing society and away from any kind of social relationship. “ None of the young men were quite good enough for Miss Emily as such. ” The Gierson house is a physical reminder of Miss Emily’s reluctance to change. She keeps everything the same way. The fact that she does not want to bury her father shows the reader her fear to change. Emily is so used to having her father to be there for her, she figures that by keeping his body he can still be part of her life.
With the several interventions of the doctors and ministers ,she finally buried him. When Emily died people went in the house to investigate. What really shock me was the fact that locked upstairs room had men’s clothing and accessories Emily had bought. On the bed lie Homer dead with next to him “ a long strand of iron-gray hair. ” The fact that she killed the man she was involved with shows the reader her underlying mental problems. Her strong inner sense of pride, both herself and her family drove her to murder.
