Both narratives showed the concept of friendship and realization. The authors described every detail of this concept to show the readers the meaning and essence of friendship, love, and mortality. Shakespeare and the author of Gilgamesh both described how impact and restoration of freedom, transformation, and realism in their text.Essay and Peer ReviewThe authors of these two stories played an important role in creating a significant imagination of love, friendship, and mortality. The “Epic of Gilgamesh” and “Romeo and Juliet” are depictions of social reality during the earlier century. These texts become the patterns of modern authors based on their tragic plots and twisted resolutions. Shakespeare is known for his significant writings.

His literary pieces served as the continued trend of literary world in the past, present, and future. The epic of Gilgamesh describes how the concept of mortality that lies within the heart of the bearer. The form of the two texts is the same for they are both plays.

However, the Epic of Gilgamesh uses Tablet to divide each part while the Romeo and Juliet uses Act to separate one occurrence to another. Another thing is that the Epic of Gilgamesh is a continuous plot while the Romeo and Juliet uses specific dialogues from a character – portraying the traditional construction of play. From these distinctions, we could already see the disparity between the two books aside from their content and completeness.Shakespeare and the author of Gilgamesh are similar when it comes to their concept of justice, faith, and morality within their text.

However, their attacks and points or view are different from one another. As I have read the two books, there are several instances and justifications where Shakespeare and the author of Epic of Gilgamesh have the same perspective and ideas. Even if their attacks are different, they still lie within the notion and impact of lesson driven works to make their readers understand the main point of their narrative. In comparison of the two authors, Shakespeare shows much on the reality or truth despite of the fact that his story is fiction but the author of Gilgamesh uses epic story to justify the concepts of love, friendship and mortality. Because of this, Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet serves as a transformation of social reality from fictive to truth while the Gilgamesh gives further information on how an epic character resolves his personal conflict throughout the story. Though the play Epic of Gilgamesh gives moral lessons, it is not like the play Romeo and Juliet that speaks about the truth with human characters in real time. The story of “Romeo and Juliet” is about two hearts falling in love. The families of Romeo and Juliet are mortal enemies even in the past.

Both Romeo and Juliet want to unite their families but the history could not let them obtain this. Nevertheless, despite of this situation, Romeo and Juliet’s love grows stronger to the extent that no one could ever tear them apart. At the end of the story, both of them died – holding each other’s hands to show their society that no matter how tough it seems their love will bring them together – even in death.

The plot of this play is simple and tragic. It gives pain, suffering, and hope to the readers. The setting of this story is during the period of kings and queens in the early society of the world. The author described how love conquers all despite of all the circumstances it may be. However, the plot is not only about this issue. Romeo and Friar Laurence’s connection and friendship describe the meaning of true essence of leadership, companionship, and compassion. They can defeat everyone around them if they are together. This serves as the base of power, strength, and authority of the text in general.

On the other way around, the author of Epic of Gilgamesh shows how friendship is important. The impact of friendship to Gilgamesh serves as the point of description of his deeper characterization. Gilgamesh loves Enkidu so dearly that is why his death becomes the niche to change Gilgamesh’s perception towards life. Along with the form of sacrifice, threat, and sufferings, Gilgamesh realizes that everyone may die without knowing his fate. After realizing that Enkidu’s death is a form of sacrifice to transform Gilgamesh’s perspective in life, the concept of friendship and compassion occur deep within him.

The main idea of the authors in their stories is to show that life is meaningful and full of struggle, pain, and suffering but if they went on through a transformation, they will acquire better future and fulfillment in life. “Care keeps his watch in every old man’s eye, / And where care lodges, sleep will never lie; / But where unbruised youth with unstuff’d brain / Doth couch his limbs, there golden sleep doth reign (Friar Laurence Act II, Scene II).” According to the scene where Friar Laurence speaks, it is being said that friendship is the best thing that anyone could offer but it always depend on the bearer and acceptance of the receiver. Conversely, in the Epic of Gilgamesh, Enkidu achieves everything to make Gilgamesh happy in everything he does. In every situation, Enkidu plays as Gilgamesh’s best friend. Enkidu’s death also serves as Gilgamesh’s realization towards the concept mortality and life. Just like what Friar Laurence accomplishes in the Romeo and Juliet. He creates the path to make Romeo and Juliet’s wedding possible.

Laurence also goes through different struggle for his friend Romeo. In the context of mortality, both the Epic of Gilgamesh and Romeo and Juliet construct a notion of reality towards existence and mission for to their people. The Epic of Gilgamesh discusses the meaning and essence of mortality as it tells how someone creates his goals and purpose of living. Gilgamesh shows this aspect as he transforms his ideals and perspectives in life after Enkidu’s death. He becomes more aware with his surroundings in a more sensitive condition.

This is also the same with Romeo and Juliet. Romeo has his purpose of living – to love Juliet and to save his kingdom against the enemies. When he thought that Juliet is already dead, he ends his life because he knows that his purpose of living is already done. The two texts are simple but the twists and turns bring confusion to the readers. However, each idea is given full attention so that the authors could thoroughly define the significance and quintessence of each case. Each situation is connected to one another. The authors deal with a straight focus in identifying the main point and argument of their text.

“Enkidu addressed Gilgamesh, saying: / “My friend, we can be bold… / How shall we respond.

.. / My friend, I saw… / And my strength.

.. (Epic of Gilgamesh,Tablet IV).”  The same with Gilgamesh, Enkidu is true to him. He is ready to fight for him no matter what happen. This is one of the main points of the play. Same with this play, Shakespeare’s main point is to show true love and friendship through the actions and ideologies of his protagonists.

As what the two authors is trying to convey, it is seen in the parts of the narratives given that friendship is one of the major themes of these plays. The authors might be different on how they share their thoughts or ideas about the concept and context of friendship but they have the same conviction in demonstrating the meaning and wholeness of the text to their audience. Then again, the difference between the two authors is through their points of attack. Shakespeare obtains different branches of scenarios to learn other forms of realization at the end of his play while the author of Gilgamesh goes through a specific point to internalize the life and struggle of Gilgamesh as well as his acquisition of true meaning of mortality. In conclusion, it is being said that the authors played a significant role in portraying the imagination and creativity of the texts.

They are the sole owner of their imaginations and ideas. As they continue to explore the meaning and essence of their stories, they also share the reality of life through their characters and whole plot. In general, the stories are serious enough to unravel the main point of the plot. The authors signified a social realm that tackles the trend of literary scene.

Until now, these two authors are some of the foundation of literature is many aspects and comprehension.                     Works CitedAnonymous. “The Epic of Gilgamesh.” Wolf Carnahan.
