Heros come in many signifiers. Some such as immense in size and strength as Hercules, some in the signifier of people that are shunned upon, such as Harriet Tubman, and some that are merely valiant heroes to some, such as Kurt Cobain. These heroes have many features that make people flock to their side and follow them without a idea of vacillation. In Sophocles & # 8217 ; Antigone the hero is a adult females that believes in her bosom far stronger than that of her leader & # 8217 ; s regulation. This brings up many features that are shown within her that are besides seen in other heroes. One being that she is up against an impossible enemy, one who does non suit good into society & # 8217 ; s cast, and is destroyed by her ain pride. For these features Antigone is given the rubric of an heroic poem Heroin.
Antigone is one of the lucky townspeople to be born of a royal house, yet is luckless to be born in the House that she is born into. As Antigone defies Creon & # 8217 ; s jurisprudence, she is cast into a pool of danger between what she believes is right and what the province & # 8217 ; s jurisprudence edicts is right. As Antigone is charged with the burial of her brother, an action which the King has declared improper, she holds like rock to her deathless gratitude for her asleep brother. She holds to this idea because of the fact that she believes that her, who died contending against the province, must be interred with the same award as her brother who died supporting the province. She believes that this will assist raise the expletive plagued on the family. The expletive in which there father tried to keep at bay and failed. Her sister Ismene warned Antigone by crying & # 8220 ; Sister please, please! retrieve how our male parent dice: hated, in shame, wrapped in horror of himself, his ain manus knifing out his sight. And how his mother-wife in one, twisted off her earthly yearss with a cord. And thirdly how our two brothers in a individual twenty-four hours each achieved for each a self-destructive Nemesis & # 8221 ; ( 166 ) . This has already gave Antigone the head set that even the Supreme beings are against her will. She is besides up against a great enemy in contending that of Creon & # 8217 ; s edict. Ismene has said this: & # 8220 ; The remainder, if we defy our crowned head & # 8217 ; s edict and his power. Remind ourselves that we are adult females, and such non made to contend with work forces. For might unluckily is right and makes us bow to things like this and worse & # 8221 ; ( 167 ) . So as one would believe Antigone sees herself as non merely on who can withstand the power of the Supreme beings but the power of the province. Thus she would be up against an force greater than her ain.
features of a tragic hero is that the individual does non ever fit into society’s cast. The tragic hero is normally one who wants alteration, yet besides needs the peace that goes along with stableness. The fact that the tragic hero besides normally thinks that they are in at that place right head when yet the remainder of the society thinks that they are huffy. Antigone has said “Say that I am huffy, and frantically allow me put on the line the worst that I can endure and the best” ( 168 ) . this shows that although Antigone thinks she is making is right, she besides does non care how the other members of society deem her for her action. Antigone besides must believe that she must be different from non merely society but members of her household. Creon notes on this when he is inquiring her about his announcement “O, she’s the adult male, non I, if she can walk off unharmed! I swear I barely care if she be my sister’s kid, or linked to me by blood more closely than any member of my fireplace and place ( 181 ) . This should besides demo one that Creon does non care about her aristocracy and that he will handle her merely like one any other member of society.
Last, Antigone is inherently destroyed by the one thing that is her tragic defect: inordinate pride. This was besides a ruin of her male parent Oedipus. This pride could besides be confused with award. Antigone non merely defies Creon & # 8217 ; s edict but besides makes a jeer of it when he asks her about it. When asked if she knows the edict her exclaiming is & # 8220 ; Of class I knew. Be it non publically proclaimed? & # 8221 ; ( 179 ) . This line clearly shows that Antigone has knows that she broke the edict and besides is non shamed to acknowledge it to the Godhead of the edict himself. She about revels in stating Creon about it. Antigone besides shows that she choose what to make non based on the jurisprudence of the province but on the Torahs of the Gods. Antigone besides embellishes her statement by stating Creon that he is a sap to judge her on what she has done. & # 8220 ; I feel no pangs of sorrow. And if you think I am a sap, possibly it is because a sap is justice & # 8221 ; ( 180 ) . If anything this clearly states that she has inordinate pride for what she has done and will do certain that Creon knows this and her genuine gratitude for her dead brothers.
As one can state the function of a tragic hero is one that Antigone plays good. Although she dies at the terminal of this drama, Antigone feels no sorrow in what she has done. She besides shows that she is proud of the fact that she ne’er denied burying her brother. One would deduce that although of her decease, Antigone died for what she believed. This is the extreme feature in the portrayal of a tragic hero.
