After going over all of my options over the past 2 yeas, I have decided that I would like to follow through with a career in small business management and administration. This career is contained in the Business Management and Administration. The duties and of this career include planning, organizing, directing and evaluating business functions that are essential to efficient and productive business operations. A Business Management and Administration career opportunities are available in every sector of the economy, I picked this career because I have always wanted to work under my own conditions and rules.

I want to create a less formal work place for my employees. I want to create a business tat gives back to its community and provides more than “good” service. This paper will justify my career choice, detail my qualifications, and analyze my job opportunities versus risks. In tenth grade I took a personality test, my results stating that I was an ENFP (Extroverted, Intuitive, Feeling, Perceiving) personality type. ENFP’s are full of enthusiasm and new ideas. Optimistic, spontaneous, creative, and confident, ENFP’s have original minds and a strong sense of the possible.

I agree with theses results because I am a very enthusiastic person, and I do have a strong sense of the possible. With this being true about my personality, these skills and characteristics will help me in my career choice by giving me different views on other people’s situations and aspects on different subject. Every individual has personal strengths and weaknesses that shape his or her life in a positive or negative way. One has to fully understand and be able to use his strengths and weakness in a positive way to succeed in life.

Our everyday life, whether at work or at home is affected by how we use our strengths and weakness. We can improve our strengths and work on our weakness to achieve positive goals in life. I was raised in a closed knit family that had always seemed to have one thing go wrong after another, but our emphasis on family values and strong moral ethics shaped my life in a significant way to how I approach everything from work to personal relationships. I learned to respect everybody regardless of his or her beliefs and different views, ethnicity, race, or religion.

That helps me at work to listen to my teammates, peers, and coworkers’ different ideas and work with them in a positive way to achieve best results of any situation. I am also ambitious and have strong loyalty to my family and friends. My weaknesses are to be too quick to judge when put on the spot, and when in a situation where I have to make an important decision, I take my time and think over all of the possible outcomes and of either choice before I decide. To make decision I have to look back on life experience and decide from similar situations.

Certain job Experiences help with the decision making process. For many people, a first job is a rite of passage. It is one step further than being juvenile and one step closer to the state of independence. When one becomes hired for the first time, there is a sense of joy and excitement for being chosen to exhibit one’s skills but there is also a sense of apprehension because it allows the uncovering uncharted territories, which can frustrate one if it is not overcome. I discovered many things during the time of my employment and with all I had to overcome it has helped me in numerous ways.

I was hired to work in Country Meadows Retirement Home as an Evening Dinner Server. I was quite excited to obtain my first occupation. After leaving Country Meadows, I also worked at McDonalds as a register attendant. But from lack of hours I was forced to leave and find suitable employment elsewhere. Finding appropriate work in Redners Warehouse Markets, I work as a front-end associate, primarily operating a cash register. One question that they ask you when you are being interviewed for each of these occupations is “What type of skills can you bring to this company? I answer this question in a few different ways, some of which being, “I have some experience in the Spanish language, if needed I can translate what is being said. I also have experience in Sign Language; I know how to ask certain questions that could be helpful in a conflict to the hearing impaired. “ With these skills being a Business Manger and Owner will be slightly easier because I can communicate with people that are not fluent in the English language. Even though these skills can be helpful in certain situations, the only skill that is truly useful is experience.

From my first practice interview I learned that if you dress too casually than they might think that you are not serious about the job, but if you dress to formally they will think that you don’t understand the job completely. It is best to just wear a pair of black slacks, black dress shoes, and a white, black, or creme colored shirt. For my interview at McDonalds I wore a pair of black slacks, a white button up shirt, and a pair of black dress shoes, also for my interview at Redners Warehouse Markets, I wore a pair of black slack, beige shirt, and a pair of black shoes.

In which all of my interviewers commented on how I was dressed nicely for the interview. For orientation I wore a similar outfit for both occupations. It is a good idea to wear semi-casual clothing for a job shadowing as well. If semi-casual attire does not fit the occupation, it is best to dress for the job you are shadowing or applying for. For my job shadowing I plan to follow a small business manager, I have a job- shadowing put in line to follow the manager of the Dollar Tree in the Northside Commons. By doing this job shadowing I hope to learn the ins and outs, basic techniques, and the secrets to running a small business efficiently.

To help me in my job shadowing experience I took an Entrepreneurship class during my eleventh grade year. This class covered most of the basics involving small business management, but did not go in depth with every aspect of all included occupations within this field. This class went over many different parts of starting and working in a small business management career. Though the class did not go through everything more in depth, this would have been helpful because it would have provided much more information on all aspects of this specific occupation.

Though my high school career did not provide me much experience and knowledge in learning and understanding the Small Business Management Career I hope to attain and further that knowledge and experience in College. If I find the college is not attainable in the near future I will work as a business intern at one ore two local businesses to gain the experience I need to start my own business. Though both options are very much possible, I do hope to attend Harrisburg Area Community College, or HACC, for their Business Management Program.

I aspire to finish the two-year program with my Business Degree in Business Management. After I finish college or during college I plan to work part-time and save money, including college fees and any expenses that starting my business may have. Some of these expenses may include rent or location fees. I plan to live at home with my parents and commute to college until my two-year program is completed. If I were to live on campus that would cause unnecessary expenses and cause a large sum drop in my savings account. Living at home causes less of a hassle in dealing with unneeded expenses.

After college I plan to buy a two story house in-town Palmyra and make the entire first floor my business. Having different sections set up for different items. Keeping in mind that a business is in need of an office, storage, and facilities for customers and staff. If I own the house and open my business on the first floor than I do not have to pay a separate rent for my business and I do not have to have separate utility bills. If I were to pursue my career choice in small business management, it would create more jobs in the local economy.

With my career choice and actions causing an increase in the local economic job flow, this creates a positive reputation for my business. With that being as it is, this will give my business the “lift” it needs to start off. I want my lifestyle to be as low stress as possible, which is why having my business and home at the same location will be easier because it will only cost me one set of utility bills instead of two. Having this career in the home and a small family will be easier than if I were to have a separate location for the home and the business.

The business in the home would leave more money for the family to use towards more expendable items, such as: vacations, family trips, and other luxury items. With all of these things in mind, in the next three to ten years, I see myself working full-time for one year so in the case of something happening I have a cushion of funds. After working for a year I plan on going to college for a two-year degree in business management, and a two-year degree in photographic arts. While in college earning my degree in business and photography, I plan to work part-time.

After I graduate from college I plan to work full time for 1 year and save as much money as I can towards my business. After a year of working I plan to use the money I have saved and buy a two-story house and renovate the first floor entirely to make it into my photography studio. The second floor will be for my family and myself. I plan to have a small family a husband and 1 or 2 children. This project in my opinion has helped me to decide what I am going to do with the next 5 years of my life. This essay has made it easier to plan each step of my future.

I feel that I have done this entire project very well. If I were to go back and edit this essay and project to change it, I would re-read the essay and go into more detail with everything, giving the read a better idea of what I have planned. If I could go back to my tenth grade year, I would redo the first components of this project and complete the items that I did not finish. But since that is not an option I plan to finish all components of my graduation project as soon as possible and to the best of my ability so I may graduate in June of 2011.
