Charlie? s Treatment Essay, Research Paper
Charlie, the chief character in Charlie, by Daniel Keyes is treated otherwise by everyone he
knows. Imagine you had mental deceleration. You merely know the rudimentss of anything. You can? t enchantment and
hold an highly limited vocabulary. Suddenly you have an experimental operation. This makes you
highly smart. Now you can understand emotions. With this new apprehension you know how
everyone has been handling you.
Compared to everyone else Charlie is treated nicely by his male parent. His male parent protects him from
most everyone. Even his female parent. Not merely does his male parent accept him but excepts the fact that Charlie is
retarded. & # 8220 ; How do you cognize? What do you cognize about this adult male? If there was anything that could be
done, the physicians would hold told us a long clip ago. & # 8221 ; ( 94, Keyes ) . This is what Matt, the male parent, was
stating to Rose, the female parent. They were at a physicians office with the immature Charlie. Rose felt that Dr.
Guarino could do Charlie smart. Matt is disbelieving that this could work. He is right, it doesn? T. Charlie? s
female parent treats him much otherwise than Matt.
How Rose dainties Charlie can sort into two stages. Before Norma, his sister, was born Rose
was sort and loving towards Charlie. However, one time Norma was born Rose was rough and concerned that
Charlie would ache, or even kill Norma. In the book there is an incident in which Rose was be aftering to kill
Charlie if he wasn? t sent off. Again, before Norma was born Rose would hold done anything to do
Charlie smart. & # 8220 ; He? s traveling to be normal, whatever we have to make, whatever it costs. & # 8221 ; ( 94, Keyes ) . This is
what Rose said to Matt merely before they went to see Dr. Guarino. Rose will besides believe anything that is
said about Charlie going smart. On the whole, before Norma was born Rose loved and cherished
Charlie, and after, she neglected and hated him. Another individual who mirrors Rose? s actions is Professor
Prof. Nemur was one of the scientists who performed the experiment on Charlie. Before Charlie
had the operation Prof. Nemur was handling him like an Ob
ject. Although, Charlie didn? T know it one could
experience it from the reading. After the operation Charlie notices this and makes Prof. Nemur aware. & # 8220 ; He
treated me & # 8211 ; even so & # 8211 ; as a human being. It may sound like ungratefulness, but this is one of the things I
resent here & # 8211 ; the attitude that I am a guinea hog. Nemur? s changeless mentions to holding made me what I am,
or that someday there will be others like me who will go existent human beings. & # 8221 ; ( 101, Keyes ) . The & # 8220 ; he & # 8221 ;
Charlie references is Dr. Guarino. This quotation mark shows merely how otherwise everyone treated him. Prof.
Strauss, like Matt, treats Charlie with more regard that Nemur.
Prof. Strauss is another scientist working on the experiment with Charlie. He gives advice and
understands some jobs Charlie has. When Charlie is at a medical convention with the professors at that place
is a little party. At this party Prof. Nemur is explicating Charlie? s experiment. Charlie interrupts Nemur
with talk of an article which attacked the manner they reversed his deceleration. Nemur shrugs it off and
continues. At that point Charlie starts to speak to Strauss.
& # 8220 ; What did I twenty-four hours that upset him in that manner? & # 8221 ; ( 104, Keyes ) . Charlie asked Strauss
& # 8220 ; You? re doing him experience inferior and he can? t take it. & # 8221 ; ( 104, Keyes ) . Strauss responds.
& # 8220 ; I? m serious for God? s interest. State me the truth. & # 8221 ; ( 104, Keyes ) .
& # 8220 ; Charlie, you? ve got to halt thought that everyone is express joying at you. Nemur couldn? T discuss
those articles because he hasn? t read them. & # 8221 ; ( 104, Keyes ) . This short conversation shows two things. It
shows that Strauss is concerned about Charlie and feels it would be better to assist him. Besides, it shows that
Nemur doesn? T desire his experiment. In other words he wants to be in the spotlight.
These conflicting feelings confuses Charlie. Since his rational side much exceeds his
emotional side he doesn? Ts know how to manage these new emotions. In the film Charlie asks Alice why
people Dons? Ts make merriment of a cripple, or person who? s deaf but do do merriment of a idiot. Anyone who does
do merriment of a retarded individual is unjust to all human nature and are idiots themselves.
