According to the Federal Law, The Patient Self- Determination Act requires all health care facilities to provides every patient with informed and consented information about their right to make decisions regarding their health. These are called Advance Medical Directives. Patients are also provided with information about state laws that may impact legal choices in making health care decisions. Some of those Advanced Medical Directives are: Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) Order Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care.

Health Care Proxy Living Will Organ or Tissue Donation This has had a huge effect on health care delivery. I have a Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care which includes my decisions regarding prolonging my life and my decision not to accept blood transfusions. I mentioned that because I know that the legal impact of that is if I am unconscious and unable to speak for my self, the emergency room staff can give me blood. Or a doctor may choose not to honor my wishes and override it.

I think that records management in this area is extremely important due to persons like me who do not wish to receive blood transfusions. I believe that medical centers such as Loyola Medical Center in Illinois have definitely responded to this legislation procedure. With so many patients , who have many different wishes, record management should be accurate. An example if this is that on the day of my surgery, which was at another Loyola Medical center location, they were able to bring up my DPA electronically.
