Technology has been rapidly moving towards the modern world. The rapid growth of technology-based type of system influenced the procedures of business establishments, workgroups, institutions, and companies, not only in the private sector but also in the public sector. One of the famous technologies that are widely used until now by the companies and institutions is the integration of barcode technology in the applications used within the procedures and transactions being made by a company.
In 1981 the United States Department of Defense (DoD) adopted the use of Code 39 for marking all products sold to the United States military. This system, LOGMARS, is still used by DoD and is widely viewed as the catalyst for widespread adoption of barcoding in industrial applications (http://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Barcode). Barcoding technology is still widely used in different industries at present time. Malls and department stores are still in touch with this type of technology making their transaction procedures faster, not only these particular establishments have been under this technology but schools as well.
Having this kind of technology and being in the field of computer science, the focus must be on how this certain type of technology will affect the procedures being made by a particular institution upon its implementation. The researcher will focus primarily in the development of a software application since the study is more about system application involvement in the processes of a certain institution. The aspects and factors that affect an institution having a manual system to an automated or digital type of system are within the scope of the study.
Cararayan National High School (CNHS) was chosen being one of the sectors involved in the technological development and for its need of having an automated type of time recording system. Statement of the Problem Technological development has been a want in certain companies and institutions. These institutions more likely don’t want to be left behind when it comes to technological advancement. Also, the need for its staffs to be more efficient and productive arose and that leads them to grasp this technology. It is therefore in this view that this study is being conducted.
This study aims to determine the advantages of the implementation of automated daily time record for the employees of Cararayan National High School (CNHS). Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions: 1. What are the processes involved in the current daily time recording procedure of CNHS? 2. What are the problems encountered with the current daily time recording procedure of CNHS? 3. What are the essential features of the automated daily time recording system? 4. Is the administration willing to adopt the automated daily time recording system?
Scope and Limitation. This study will focus mainly on the Cararayan National High School’s (CSNHS) current system used as a daily time record of teachers and the new system that will be developed by the researcher to help and improve the current system that is in existent on the place of study. The study of the current system will be covered but will only include information based on the data that will be gathered by the researcher through answering some important questions in relation to the study. However, the information that will be gathered by the researcher will only comprise of employees and will exclude students of CNHS.
This research will identify problems encountered in the current system, however, problems and anomalies that will be found out during the study will not necessarily mean that the program that will be developed by the researcher should be able to address all these problems having an uncontrollable and a controllable factors within the CNHS premises and regulations. The software program and the barcode system that will be developed by the researcher are not subject to compete with other technologies such as the Bundy clock. It will only be used as an instrument and as a part of the research requirement.
The front-end application will be developed in Visual Basic . NET 2008 and SQL Server 2005 as its back-end application. The program that will be developed will be limited to the generation of barcodes and generation of reports of the daily time record of teachers and the administration. Monitoring and tracking of the time of arrival and departure of the teachers as well as the computation of the number of hours worked will be the main focus and functionality of the software program that will be developed by the researcher.
Definition of Terms. Automation – This refers to the use of control systems and information technologies to reduce the need for human work in the production of goods and services. Cararayan National High School – It is a public secondary school under the authority of the Department of Education Naga City, Philippines founded in 1989. Daily Time Record – It refers to the file, card, or sheet that contains information about an employee’s time of arrival, time of departure, and the number of hours worked. Barcode – It refers to an optical machine-readable representation of data, which shows data about the object to which it attaches.
Back-end application – It is a program which serves indirectly in support of the front-end services, usually by being closer to the required resource or having the capability to communicate with the required resource (e. g. a database application). Front-end application – It refers to the one that application users interact with directly. Profile of Respondents The respondents of this research were the employees of Cararayan National High School (CNHS). They were chosen reasonably because they were the one who is directly involved in the daily time recording procedures of CNHS.
With this, along with the respondents’ background, the researcher thought of a good point to start the study. The total number of employees is forty-two. The employees not covered by the study comprise one casual employee, one PTA-funded bookkeeper, one disbursing officer, three school guards, and eleven locally-funded teachers with one guidance counselor, some of these employees are involved in the daily time recording procedures of CNHS. Twenty-three regular/permanent teachers and one school head that are directly involved in the daily time recording procedures and will be the target respondents of the researcher.
