Digitalmedia has influenced politics here in the United States because of televisedcampaign ads, internet released campaign ads, cell phones, computers, etc.
These have played an impact by individuals having direct access to newsupdates, news casts, and any other information at the tip of his or herfingers. Digital media can also allow a political figure to slander his or heropponent. In every election I can remember it seems like which candidate canmake the other candidate look worse. There is constant “digging up dirt”against the opponent. Digital media has taught us that nothing posted on theinternet is safe no matter how safe you think it really is. Security andprivacy settings can be set but we have learned that even with those settingsanything posted to the internet can be found if the right people are looking.Politics have been included by digital media because anything and everythingfrom their past that has been digitally stored has come back to haunt them, even if at the time it seemed like it had no repercussions. Beforesocial media an individual retrieved his or her information from newspapers, mail, and word of mouth to mouth.
In present day society, being the digitalmedia era, an individual can retrieve his or her information at the tip oftheir fingertips. Whether is it clicking the power button to the television or,searching the internet on a cell phone or computer. In the week 2 class reading’Social Media and the Decision to Participate in Political Protest:Observations from Tahrir Square’ The University of North Carolina at ChapelHill conducted more than 1,000 interviews with protestors in Egypt after HosniMubarak resigned from being President (Remington 2012). The study found thatinterviewees used their Twitter and Facebook accounts to communicate about theprotests. Some of the protesters communicated by E-mail while others took theold fashion route and communicated face to face. Even in other countries socialmedia is made an impact of day to day life.
In the United States digital mediais everywhere; television, internet, radio, and cell phones. TheUnited States see digital media as a part of the modern lifestyle; it is nolonger classified as a luxury. School, work, everywhere you turn digital mediaplays an impacting role. In the week 2 class reading Digital humanitarian, wewatched a video about how mobile phone power digital relief.
Social media hasbeen used to bring attention to numerous disasters around the world. In 2010Haiti experience one of the worst earthquake in their history (DesRoches, M.EERI, Eberhard, & Mooney, 2011).Even though this happened in Haiti, Americans brought the attention to the problemand started a fundraiser to help the cause. The cause had helped save some ofthe surviving families.I think socialmedia has impacted the world both positively and negatively. I think thepositive changes are everything you can imagine is available right at the tipof your fingers.
A political figure can have direct contact with voters viaYouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat etc., being able to talk to them in realtime it’s fast and convenient. Having direct access to voters has its downsideas well, it allows for instantaneous backlash for something unfiltered beingput out to the public. Social media allows a political figure to advertiseonline via YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat etc. for no cost versusadvertising on television and having to pay for advertising time.
Keeping upwith current digital and social media helps you reach out to a wide variety ofage groups. It can also cause a negative impact because you could find yourselfpotentially limiting your campaign to a specific age group. Some people notborn in the digital age might not keep up with current digital and social medianews.
