The Burmese people are treated as 2nd category citizens in their ain state. They are oppressed, by the British imperium, that has invaded their land. Bing a constabulary officer Orwell sees first manus ferociousness captives experience, & # 8220 ; huddling in the stinking coops of the lock-ups, the Grey, cowed faces of the long-run inmates, the frightened natess of the work forces who had been flogged with bamboos & # 8221 ; ( 842 ) ; but like so many Europeans he feels helpless to make anything about the atrociousnesss he witnesses.

Orwell is non forced to admit these atrociousnesss until he is put into the place to hit an elephant. After, the elephant kills a indigen, the Burmese people look for the elephant to be killed. While contemplating on whether to hit the elephant or non, his motivations become personal. The writer

positions himself as an Anglo-indian that refused, “to come all that manner, rifle in manus, with two thousand people processing at my heels, and so to drag feebly off, holding done nothing” ( 845 ) . Orwell gives the feeling, that the criterions placed on him, as a white adult male, and his self-importance, have put him in a place, to hold to hit and kill the elephant. Bing a minority among indigens Orwell comes to recognize that, “ [ his ] whole life, [ and ] every white man’s life in the East, was one long battle non to be laughed at” ( 845 ) . No affair how much the writer refuses in his head, to hit the elephant. The crowd urges Orwell to kill and he as a, “white adult male mustn’t be frightened in forepart of “natives” ; and so, in general, he isn’t frightened” ( 846 ) .

After Orwell shoots and kills the elephant he, & # 8220 ; [ perceives ] in this minute that when the white adult male turns tyrant it is his ain freedom that he destroys & # 8221 ; ( 845 ) . The writer besides, comes to recognize that he is portion of a society, that places more value on an elephant, than on a human life. Orwell hears remarks like, & # 8220 ; it was a darn shame to hit an elephant for killing a cooly & # 8221 ; ( 847 ) .

At the terminal of the essay it is upseting to believe, that Orwell is really portion of the barbarous rhythm, alternatively of portion of the solution when he ends with the remark ; & # 8220 ; I frequently wonder whether any of the others grasped that I had done it entirely to avoid looking a sap & # 8221 ; ( 847 ) .
