Marks and Spencer’s Plan A policy

 

Mark and Spencer’s Plan A is a five-year plan [1] which consists of a 100-point plan to confront any challenges to the ecosystem. The aim here is to work with customers and suppliers to fight climate changes, reduction of waste, safeguarding natural resources, ethnic trading and to build a healthier nation.

The key areas or the five pillars are aimed at making the business sustainable and kind to the environment we live in. The five areas that covered are climate change, waste management, raw material sustainability, good health and fair partnership. The goal of each pillar is to be carbon neutral, no waste in landfills, broaden sustained sourcing, improve lives of people who are connected to supply chain, aim at a healthier lifestyle for employees and customers.

 

·    Climate change – reduction of carbon emission, energy consumption and increase the use of renewed energy. Some of the initiatives include eco factory, greening store environment and making of the green factory.

 

·    Waste management – Reduction of clothing and package waste in landfills by reducing the packaging, improvising on recycling and decrease the use of plastic bags. Some of the initiatives include charges for carrier bags, making Christmas cards into trees and waste food conversion to fuel.

 

·    Raw material sustainability – The main aim here is to sustain fishing and animal welfare. Some of the initiatives include fresh eggs, cruelty free tests, free range pork, fight against deforestation and recycled plastic bottles.

 

·    Good health – M&S aims at improved lifestyles which is reduced intake of fat and sugar, no artificial additives and colours in products, low alcohol range of wines, better product labelling and trained healthcare professionals

 

·    Fair partnership – M&S believes in ethical trading giving benefit of welfare to thousands of farmers.

 

The purpose of this policy is to work together with the customer and the supplier. It is the correct thing to do keeping in mind the scenario of today’s world. The policy is called Plan A, due to the fact that there is no Plan B and Plan A is the only way to solve any problems.

 

Mark and Spencer’s have shown continued efforts in making the environment much greener. Issues such as climate change, global warming, animal welfare and renewed energy are all looked into. Some detailed proofs of evidence that Mark and Spencer’s is doing major contribution is that

 

 

·    Charging carrier bags – So that customers are dissuaded from buying carry bags and will us the free Bag for Life instead in a bid to reduce the consumption of bags used.

 

·    Using food waste from stores – They are using food waste to power stores with the hep of renewable energy.

 

·    Celebrities helping in Shelter Campaign – During the Christmas season Mark and Spencer’s will make a contribution to charities, housing and Shelters on every “specially labelled products” that is sold.

 

·    Free Range Turkey – Turkeys for Christmas last year were reared in a free range environment showing M&S commitment towards animal welfare.

 

·    Recycling of hangers – M&S has recycled unwanted coat hangers of its customers saving 1 billion coat hangers which is approximately 32,000 tonnes of plastic.

 

·    Reduction of Carbon emission – The newly designed trailers has a teardrop design that reduces Carbon dioxide emission by 20%

 

·    Wine Carriers from Denim – Denim materials is used to make wine boxes, so that fabric can be saved and it can be easily recycled along with other household paper waste.

 

·    M&S Eco-Factory – the new factory coming up in Sri Lanka will be Carbon neutral, will use renewable energy such as solar thermal, solar-electric, wind energy and LED lighting; and will practically send no waste to landfills.

 

Mark and Spencer’s believe in Fairtrade products, recycled, eco-home and organic products. In Greener living brings to you energy saving light bulbs, water saver system and compost bins. It has also Fairtrade price for basic essentials allowing fair price for farmers in Africa and in India. The premium got helps in building schools, nurseries and in the development of health education for all children. Other clothing includes organic cotton, linen fibres and recycled polyester, along with oil from plastic bottles is made into fleeces and trousers. Washing Fairtrade clothing at 30°C saves around 40% of energy which reflects on the environment as well as expenditure.

 

M&S has done fair progress in its initiative to reach it 2012 target concentrating on the key areas such as climate change, waste management, raw material sustainability, good health and fair partnership. Hey have tied up with Oxfam, Closed Loop Recycling and WWF saving animals such as Orang-utans, Macaws, Borneo pygmy elephants and the Amazon butterflies.

 

People have come forward to pledge their support for M&S, which will most defiantly work for universal good in the long run. Here should be other companies who need to join Mark & Spencer’s initiative.
