The period of clip between the Spanish-American War and World War I is known

as the Progressive Era. It was a period marked by idealism, reform, and important

economic growing. Progressivism was a motion designed to rectify the maltreatments which

reformists felt had crept into American society and authorities, as a consequence of

industrialisation and urbanisation.

Progressivism was the result of a figure of forces in American life. The

reform spirit of the 1880 & # 8217 ; s and 1890 & # 8217 ; s was still strong, despite the prostration of the Populist

Party after the election of 1896. After the difficult times of the 1890 & # 8217 ; s, many Americans were

dying for a better life and supported reforms intended to accomplish this. The in-between category,

frightened by the economic agitation of the 1890 & # 8217 ; s and the actions of giant concern

organisations, was more willing to accept progressive reforms than it had been before.

After the speedy triumph in the Spanish-American War, there was a new feeling of

assurance in the nation=s hereafter. Progressivism had many purposes.

The general purposes of Progressivism were as follows: to widen political democracy

by switching control of authorities from the political foremans and powerful industrialists to

the people ; to control the power of large business communities, in order to give greater economic

chances to little concern and labour ; and to extinguish the societal ailments of society through

needed reforms. Although the purposes of Progressivism were shared by all Progressivists,

support came from many different groups.

Progressives came from both major parties, every bit good as from minor or 3rd parties.

from urban middle-class members. They were in fright of large concern, and wanted to fall in a

motion which would endeavor to protect them. There were many accomplishments

accomplished by the Progressive Movement.

Progressivism accomplished many things. Political democracy was extended by

enterprise, referendum, callback, and the short ballot. The Seventeenth Amendment was

passed and provided for the direct election of U.S. Senators. The Nineteenth Amendment

gave the franchise to adult females to allow the choice of party campaigners by registered

electors. Many restrictions and limitations were placed on trusts. Monopolies were

prosecuted and the Clayton Act was passed. The Federal Trade Commission Act was

passed every bit good. Many Torahs which safeguarded labour and the populace were enacted. More
