Sasannah Fox and Duggan Maeve stated that in 2012 the Pew Internet Project survey revealed that 87 percent of teachers felt that “technology is creating an easily distracted generation with short attention span”. Young children are going to school struggling with self-control and attention skills the child needs for learning because of technology (Rowan). Children that are holding the screens of their devices to their face for long periods of time is causing the blue light coming from the LEDs to cause retinal damage. This could also lead to a serious eye condition known as age-related macular degeneration (Essilor News). ¬†Obesity and diabetes in children are becoming a national epidemics and it is being related to the overuse of technology. The obesity rate in children has tripled in the past twenty years. Children between the age of six and eighteen around fifteen percent of them are known to be overweight (Hatch). Cris Rowan stated that “Diagnoses of ADHD, autism, coordination disorder, developmental delays, unintelligible speech, learning difficulties, sensory processing disorder, anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders are associated with technology overuse, and are increasing at an alarming rate.” All of these diagnoses that children are starting to receive are starting to become a serious problem due to overuse of technology. Children that are using technology so often their visual and auditory sensory systems are overused. On the other hand, their vestibular, proprioceptive, tactile, and attachment systems are not used as much while children are using technology. This sensory imbalance can create problems in the neurological development of the child’s brain. The brain’s anatomy, chemistry, and pathways can become forever changed and damaged by overuse of technology (Rowan). Children have reported their body’s shaking and have increased breathing and heart rate (Rowan).Young children are getting more and more into video games and television shows that are violent. These children often stay in a high state of adrenaline and stress. The body does not know that what they are seeing is real or not. (Rowan) The violence that is shown in these games and shows have caused more aggressive behavior in the children that play or watch them. The child starts to believe that the violence they see is okay and can deal with their problems in a violent matter. This media violence that has been broadcasted through video games and television shows has been classified as a public health risk due to childhood aggression (Hatch).Technology is starting to physically affect a child’s growth. A child that is developing needs human interaction in order to develop properly. Young children need between three to four hours a day of human interaction and physical activity. Some children that do not receive this express to be more irritated and have more anxiety. This could also lead to depression in early childhood. With technology children are not using their brains full capacity and technology is not allowing them the expand their minds and have more creative thinking (Hatch).According to Time Magazine “Eight to eighteen-year-olds spend seven hours and thirty-eight minutes a day using entertainment technology a day.” They start to become captured and taken over by entertainment technology and it starts to become a constant distraction to the child. With all of the distractions of this technology, it starts to affect the way children’s brains take in new information. This can lead to continuous partial attention. Some children that use technology so often may be able to split their priority between many tasks it has also cause problems with being able to focus because of a constant blow up of new information (Hatch).Children that are using technology a lot it may help them become better multitaskers. A test was given to two different groups. In one group good multitaskers were put together and in the other group, nonmultitaskers were put together. Each group was shown pictures of red and blue triangles, and each group was told to tell whether or not the red triangles had moved or not. This test showed that the nonmultitaskers were better at getting the answer correct rather than the multitaskers. It showed that the multitaskers had a more difficult time filtering out insignificant information. This test demonstrated that children that heavily use technology start to become adjusted to its constant reminders, and will be far more affected by the new incoming information. Multitasking can be a good thing but it can also harm children from getting into higher status jobs because multitaskers become more skilled in higher repetitious jobs. For example, factory lines where less new information will come in (Hatch). However, technology can be good for children in certain ways. Technology can accelerate and improve basic skills for children. Children often become more engrossed in the material they are looking at for students that have access to technology. Technology can be motivational for a student. Students were found to produce more writing because it was easier to type and keeps the student engrossed in their writing. Technology can prepare students for the workforce at a young age also. Around sixty percent of jobs today require technical skills and with technology nowadays it has a big impact on children and this can help them get the basic skills of being able to use technology (Hatch). Technology can be good for students to use in the classroom. It can help the child receive more information on the topic they are studying in the classroom. Whether a child is learning or not while using technology in the classroom all depends on the teacher. If the teacher is letting the child do whatever they want to with the technology then that is not benefiting the student. ¬†Some experts believe that technology should never be the center of attention in the classroom and that the student should associate with the other students and teacher while using technology (Yednak). Technology can also help students that have learning disabilities. With technology, today text can be enlarged to make it easier to see or the technology can read aloud for students with reading disabilities. Some devices have been made to assist students with certain disabilities. A portable communication device that helps children with communicative disabilities to speak and talk with others through a keyboard with symbols has been invented by a company called DynaMyte. With these kinds of inventions, it has been proposed that around ninety-five percent of students with disabilities will be able to receive their education in a regular classroom with regular students (Hatch).A lot of parents worry about how technology will affect their child’s life on social media. A major complaint with technology is a problem with cyberbullying. The internet provides children with endless amounts of freedom which can lead to researching any topic and talking to anyone in the world. During the time children are growing up they are still figuring out their identity and this often causes jealousy and cyberbullying (Rhodes). But, the internet can help children develop emotional bonds with others (Hatch). Technology can help parents keep track of their children. Safety has become a major concern for parents because of the busy world. Parents that allow their children to have cell phones can help the parent keep up with their children. There are specific phones that are made just for children. Certain things have been invented for parents that would like to know the exact location of their child. A small transmitter has been invented that can fit in a children pocket or shoe. It can be triggered by a concerned parent and will send off a high pitch noises. Another invention called “Guardian Angel” allows parents to us GPS trackers in a phone to view where their child is at an exact time and location (Hatch). In conclusion, there are several instances where technology can be helpful for children but many more reasons of why it is harmful. Technology is affecting early child development because it is causing speech development problems, violence in young children, and growth and physical development problems. There are several ways parents can stop their children from using technology too much. By parents limiting the time children can use technology it can help stop the problems of technology affecting early childhood development.
