What do you think is the number one cause of teenage deaths? You probably think it is suicide, or automobile accidents, or homicides, or even heart disease. Well if you had said automobile accidents then, you are correct. Teen automobile accidents occur every minute, every hour, and every day. Teen automobile accidents are a huge problem that everyone has to deal with both physically and emotionally. I believe the best way to put an end to this is by changing the age limit to get a driver’s permit.
Teenagers should not be able to get their driver’s permit until the age of 18. The age limit to get a driver’s permit should change because teenagers are inexperienced drivers, and teenagers are easily distracted. The age limit to get a driver’s permit should increase to the age of 18 because teenagers are inexperienced drivers. Teens are less experienced with solving problems and making good decisions. Due to a lack of experience, these teenagers are more prone to accidents, especially on highways and other places with considerably more traffic.
The driver should be knowledgeable both with cars and with roads. The driver has to know how to control a car including a good awareness of the car’s size and capabilities. Teenagers between the ages of 15-17 are young and do not have enough experience throughout life for them to even drive a vehicle; that is a big responsibility that comes with many consequences. In addition, the age limit to get a driver’s permit should increase to the age of 18 because teenagers are more easily distracted than adults.
Driving is a skill that requires your full attention to safely control your vehicle and respond to events happening on the roads around you. Driving involves constant and complex coordination between your mind and body. Those are some skills that teenagers do not have when they are between the ages of 15-17. Some distractions teenagers face while driving are: cell phone usage, reaching for a moving object inside the vehicle, looking at an object or event outside of the vehicle, reading, applying makeup, chatting with friends, playing dj, loud music, texting, stress, and eating and drinking.
Teenagers are easily distracted and by giving them a permit to drive at a young age is like giving them the permission to go and play with fire. Those who support the age limit to get a driver’s permit at the age of fifteen believe that teenagers needs freedom and they need to grow up and take some responsibilities to see what the real world is about. Little do they know, the number one cause of teenage death is automobile accidents. Those who support this act don’t understand how a teenage driver faces many dangers out on the road.
All in all, I believe the age to get a driver’s permit should increase to the age of eighteen. The age limit to get a driver’s permit should increase to the age of eighteen because teenagers are inexperienced drivers and they face many distractions while driving. Each year over 5,000 teen’s ages 15 to 18 die due to fatal injuries caused by car accidents. The desire to have an automobile is everyone’s dream, but it comes with many positive and negative consequences. If teenagers get to drive under the age of 18, the rate of teen automobile accidents is going to increase more and more.
