During the poem the Odyssey Odysseus’s character was challenged in so many ways, but his strong curisma and will for survival kept him destined for success. In the story Odysseus faces many obstacles and manages to overcome them all and eventually return home to his land of Ithaca. Odysseus also has sharp intellectual skills that help him throughout his journey. Odysseus is courageous , displays many leadership qualities, and has keen sense of self control.
In book nine of the Odyssey, using his keen sense of knowledge Odysseus is able to outsmart Polyphemus, the Cyclops. In this section of the poem Odysseus character can be characterized as very intelligent, and also very clever because of the strategic plans he comes up with to solve the current problem he was in, and that was to escape from the cave of Cyclops successfully. Initially when Odysseus and his men arrived at the land of Cyclops Odysseus did not realize his current surroundings and him and his men began eating away. This really upsets the Cyclops so he then begins to eat away at Odysseus men, but throughout it all Odysseus still manages to come out on top and escape from the cave in book nine. This also made Odysseus a hero because it displayed his sense of bravery because his men that were with him would always wait for him to act on things, and if he would not have built up enough courage to stab the Cyclops in the eye so that they could escape the cave, then Odysseus and his men would have still been in the cave where they would have eventually died.Another thing that gave Odysseus the will to survive was his initial goal and that was to safely return home to his land of Ithaca, where he could be reunited with his family , his lovely wife queen Penelope and his son prince Telemachaus. Just the thought of being reunited with his son and his wife gave Odysseus the will to keep pushing no matter what obstacles he may face, because eventually he would make it to Ithaca, but the journey continued to be filled with bumps in the road. While landing on the island of the lotus eaters Odysseus and his men stop to get some water.
He warned his men that while on this island they had to be extremely careful because the lotus plant was said to be a really strong drug that once taken you would never be able to leave the island. The land of the lotus eaters was a very foreign place to Odysseus and his men therefore he sent three of his bravest soldiers to find out more about this unordinary place. Well after eating the lotus plant, Odysseus finest men had forgot everything that they had ever known. Being the leader he was and realizing an uncompleted task was still ahead of him Odysseus had to put his three men in chains and leave them behind. This displayed the leadership skills Odysseus possessed and how his courage was displayed because he had to leave his men behind, and that probably was hard for him to do, but a long journey was still ahead.
Odysseus loves all of the luxury that he receives when traveling, especially when he meets Calypso. While at Ogyia for seven years, Calypso keeps Odysseus as her husband. Even though during their time spent together the two partake in sexual activities because they are now more than friends, but lovers Odysseus still has a goal and that is to make it home to his beloved Penelope. In a way Calypso seduces Odysseus when he first arrives at her island, because her intended goal was to make Odysseus forget his wife Penelope so that he would want to spend the rest of his life with her on the island. While spending time with her Calypso became obsessed with Odysseus, and did not want him to leave.
Until one day the messenger god Hermes comes to her island to warn her that if she does not let Odysseus go that king Zeus himself will sink her entire island.Motivated by self interest Calypso does not want to be lonely and is torn when she finds out that she can no longer keep Odysseus as her love slave. Finally able to leave the island after seven years, Calypso tells Odysseus where he can find some wood so that he can build a raft. Even though Penelope cannot compete with Calypso, Odysseus loves her and is trying his best to return home to his beloved wife. In a modern day sense I would compare Odysseus to any regular man. In a relationship men will cheat, and have mistresses on the side but still have their heart belong to one woman.
I really commend Odysseus in this particular section of the story because after Calypso told him that he was free he could have decided to stay with her on the island for the rest of his life, but even seven years later he still has the will to return home to his family in Ithaca. During his journey home Odysseus is faced with some many hardships, but somehow he gets through all of them, like when he sacks the land of cicones, and ends up losing more of his men because of that, and also when Odysseus is enjoying the free milk and cheese in the cave of Polyphemus and eventually notices he is trapped when the Cyclops returns.Even when Poseidon threatens Odysseus in his journey in returning home to Ithaca with only one ship out of twelve, and no men remaining it really shows you the intensity and morals of Odysseus as a character. No Cyclops, lotus, or women could keep him away from his family. Happily reunited with his wife Penelope, the long journey of Odysseus has finally come to an end.
