Ms. Moore is the educated adult females that moves into the vicinity. She is opposite of everyone else who lives in the vicinity. Sylvia says, And she was black as snake pit cept for her pess, which were fish white and spooky. Bambara uses this quotation mark to typify how Ms. Moore is black, and that she is their connexion to the white community. This quotation mark besides represents how dry it is that Ms Moore is their connexion to the white community. The name Moore symbolizes that Ms. Moore is a individual who wants more from her kids. Through out the whole narrative she is seeking to acquire through to the kids, but they could care less. Ms. Moore did non believe she was traveling to make anyone, until at the terminal when she reached Sylvia. That & # 8217 ; s the whole sarcasm of the narrative. Sylvia who least wanted to travel injure up larning the lesson.

Sylvia is the storyteller and the chief character of the narrative. One can larn right off that Sylvia is non fond of Ms. Moore and could care less about the trip to FAO Schwarz. This is really dry sing This trip had the biggest consequence on Sylvia. Bambara illustrates this by the tone and linguistic communication of Sylvia & # 8217 ; s narrative. Her usage of slang footings and expletive words clearly indicate where she has grown up and her disfavor of Ms. Moore. For illustration, Sylvia says, I m truly detesting this crisp caput bitch and her goddamn college grade. Sylvia negotiations about how Ms. Moore says that they all live in the slums and that they are hapless. Sylvia does non hold with this. Ms. Moore is devaluating what the kids have and this enrages Sylvia. For illustration, when they get to FAO Schwarz Sylvia sees the monetary value of the canvas boat and can t believe it. The money that would be went for the sailing boat would be eno

ugh to do her and her household happy, and this infuriates her. Once in the shop, Sylvia starts to experience ashamed and covetous. After the trip is over Sylvia realizes something. Sugar says, you know Ms. Moore, I don t think all of us here put together eat in a twelvemonth what that sailing boat cost. Sylvia gets angry by this remark because sugar, her best friend is now devaluating what they have. Sylvia starts stepping on Sugar s pess. Bambara uses this to typify how the upper category community walk all over the lower category community. After this Ms. Moore looks at Sylvia and Sylvia feels something in her thorax. This is the point of disclosure. Bambara ends the narrative with Sylvia stating, Aint cipher gon na crush me at nutting. This shows how Sylvia went through a disclosure. She realizes that she has to proud of who she is. Cipher will walk all over her and she will win at whatever it is that she wants to make. She understands that she should be proud of what she is and non seek to be like person else.

Mercedes is another character who I want to speak about. Once she see s how the upperclass community lives, she instantly wants to be a portion of it. Bambara shows this when all the other kids are hesitating to walk in FAO Schwarz and Mercedes pushes them all off to travel right in. The name Mercedes is ver symbolic to what sort of individual Mercedes is. A Mercedes is an expensive auto that rich people have. She wants to be able to supply all those things for herself and her household. She is the really opposite of Sylvia. Mercedes says, I & # 8217 ; vitamin Ds like to travel back at that place when I get my birthday money. She wants to be a individual in the affluent community, Not merely be happy for what she has and who she is. It is apparent that Mercedes is an castaway in the group This becomes evident when Sylvia and Sugar push her to the letter box to be separated from them.

The major subject of The Lesson is how life & # 8217 ; s most of import lesson are non ever learned in the schoolroom.
