One needs to understand that hearing is not the same as listening and understanding, and if one does not understand it is obvious that here will not be an effective communication. Many barriers to effective communication exist to mention a few; language, distraction, and false assumptions, but one needs to master these barriers to become a good communicator. Nonverbal communication does not involve words and speech but involves body language, touch, and gestures. The following are explanations of how verbal and nonverbal communication affects communication in the following areas: Police situations (public announcement to the press), Courtroom setting (testifying), Corrections facility (employees, peers, inmates), and Juvenile facility (employees, peers, inmates). Police Situations Verbal communication has an effect on how the information is presented. Through verbal communication whoever is presenting the information has the pportunity to relay the correct information to the public, can choose the correct content and has the ability to measure the effect that it will have on the public (Riggio & Feldman, 2005). The way that verbal communication can affect the public, is that the speaker does not know how to communicate in a clear and concise way. Verbal communication can destroy the relationship between the speaker and the audience. Every speaker should communicate with respect to everyone and should also be able to measure what effect it will the content have on the receiver.

Nonverbal communication affects public announcement because it is very difficult for the receiver to understand what the sender is trying to get across, because there is no use of words only gestures. If the speaker uses both verbal and nonverbal communication, the receiver will be able to understand the message. Courtroom setting In this area verbal and nonverbal communication has effects in various ways. Both verbal and nonverbal communication can affect the process of testifying, how one may ask, person that has to testify will need to use words used to speak or write.

The way in which the words are presented by the person testifying will make it known if he/she will succeed. A perfect example occurs when the Judge asks the person in the stand and that person does not understand the judge, he/she will not be able to give a good testimony. This will definitely affect the outcome of the case. A person who performs well in a courtroom is that he/she has good communication skills. If the two parties have good communication skills the testifying process will turn out to be easy for all parties involved.

People and witnesses involved in criminal activities, both use gestures to communicate and this affects the process of testifying in Court. On the other side if the accused knows how to use gestures, he/she will be able to testify in Court with no problem. Corrections facility Good verbal communication is very important in any correction facility because this is the way that police officers give instructions to criminals. It is of high importance how the police officer communicates with inmates because it will affect the outcome of the correction process.

For the inmate to understand the police officer, the police officer needs to have good communication skills. When hatred exists between employees and police peers, it is because there is a poor communication method (Riggio & Feldman, 2005). Juvenile facility Verbal and nonverbal communication affects the juvenile facility in the way that if signals or any type of words are not used appropriately. It is of high importance for all juvenile facilities to learn how to communicate verbal and nonverbal because this will help strengthen the relationship between employees, peers, and inmates (Riggio & Feldman, 2005).
