we live in a society which seems to contradict most of its own ideas ”looks don’t matter” ; beauty is only skin deep” if looks truly don’t matter why do we photoshop and airbrush our photos to the point were the person is unrecognizable  if looks truly don’t matter why do so many young girls starve themselves to look a certain way it because our society idolizes and promotes  a specific body type  as being beautiful , the unrealistic standards of beauty put on women lead to women being bombarded with trying to reach a goal that is impossible to reach and the effects are truly devastating these impossible standard need to stop and we as a society need to promote a healthy body image along with the idea that a women of any shape and size is beautiful .   most  young girls are not  aware that the photographs they see of celebrities have been retouched, they don’t realize the women they see in movies, music videos, and TV shows have also been airbrushed The movie and music industries, as well as advertisements continuously portray an ideal and beautiful body for women as one that is thin which sets young girls to believe that they won’t be seen as beautiful unless they look a certain way , Retouching and airbrushing are rife not just among the glossy pages of magazines but also on social media platforms such as Instagram a study conducted at MIT shows that more than 82% of pictures and editorials with women have been retouched to look in a certain way ”perfect” .    Anorexia, which is the common name of the disorder anorexia nervosa, is a condition where people see themselves as being overweight, or want to control the shape and size of a specific body part, even when they are extremely thin. many of the celebrities and models that women and men look up to as having the ideal body have admitted to suffering from eating disorders. so we do we still glorify them and put them on this high pedestal, Diet advertisements are another problem. On television, in magazines and newspapers, we are continually exposed to the notion that losing weight will make us happier and it will be through “THIS diet plan”. a study showed that more that 60% of women and men have tried dieting pills to loose weight Many stimulant-type weight loss medications like phentermine or diethylpropion can cause cancer.    in addition to leading to the development of eating disorders , a poor body image can contribute to anxiety, depression, problems in relationships, and most dangerously the development of substance abuse  and consequently  many other health problems. Adult  with negative body image of concerns are in most cases more likely to be anxious, depressed,, and suicidal than those without extreme  dissatisfaction over their appearance,  according to a new study by researchers at Bradley Hospital, Butler Hospital and Brown Medical School. Helping people  break silence over  their negative feelings and concerns about their appearance is the first step in getting them to value themselves as individuals and recognize the importance of other non-weight, or non-appearance-based qualities and activities as contributors to their self-esteem and self-worth.   in conclusion unrealistic beauty standard show great negative affect on the wellbeing of adult and teens depression anxiety and eating disorders are just few of the many negative affects of the beauty standards society has set , we need to inforce a more healthy and accepting beauty standard that most people don’t feel threatened by this will show a great decrease in eating disorders and will make people much more comfortable with the way they look
