What is difficult for me as a presenter? Each day, even if we do not notice it, we present ourselves in everyday life in this or other way. Even if we are talking in a shop, when buying some food, or talking on a phone – we are constantly presenting ourselves. Of course this is completely different story when we are presenting some idea to a big audience of various people. That is different approach to some extand, which needs some practice and knowledge.
So let me focus on that in details. From one side, if you are trying to make a good presentation of certain idea, – the most important thing in it is how comfortable do you feel yourself. That is also means how fluent are you in particular topic that you are presenting so that your confidence is not only heard in the words, read through the lines but also is seen from your posture and appearance. The other important feature of good presentation – is persons’ ability to express himself/herself well and accurate. As to me, this ability comes from individuals’ organization of thoughts and ability to talk, so that ANY audience (involved or non-involved in the project) is able to understand it.
There are also some common promting to the successful presentation, no matter what kind of audience is that – suppliers, creditors or first grade kids. According to my obervations, these are:o speaker should have a clear plan of presentation,o to be able to understand the audience and its demands (each audience has its specification),o to stay out of repeating one thought couple times,o not to make pauses in speech with um’s or uh’s (during which you are trying to organize your thoughts).Keeping in mind these two important criterea (ability to express ourselves correctly and fluently in the topic as essential) we may move on to the discussion of the other problems which may arise when communicating to different audiences. For instance, if communicating audience mainly consists of experts – we are to keep in mind that fluency in the topic is the base to our effective presentation. In order to make an outstanding presentation, we are to prepare the speech which should contain certain terminology related to the topic, try to research not only the topic but be acknowledged with recent publications in that field, read or be able to comment upon questions which respective experts might have (what undermines also competence in experts’ publications (if any), speeches or scientific involvements).
When presenting some idea to non-expert audience – other specification should be kept in mind. Non-experts could be people from various fields, what means that as a presenter you may await questions of various background (not usually related to the topic) which you should answer with respect to the audience and ability to stick to the presenting topic or idea.Though when communicating to the audience of customers, we must keep in mind that not each customer is familiar with professional terminology, and therefore when using it, we should provide short desciription of the terminology. For instance, if we use the word balance, we should describe what do we mean by saying that (Example: balance, that is the difference between the totals of the credit and debit sides of an account). Also we may try to present the main idea in the light that the customer would like to hear or except and in this way he/she becomes commited customer.
In order to achieve it, the speaker should be persuasive when speaking, trying to leave no space for doubts or hesitations.According to my experience it would be very difficult to customize the same message without any strategy to the different audiences, as these people might have various interests and expectations in presentation. The only possible way which I may find is generalization of the presenatation concept. But while presenting it, the speaker is to know the referencing sources very well, so that during the communication process he/she may apply to the certain sources of the interested audience. Helpful bridge among the audiences could be simplefied tables or graphs which could be introduced in the power point or other program.
When used handouts with main point of the presentation – this linkage may also serve as a plus for the presentation. When building meaning bridges among these audiences, you should be able as a presenter to notice the nascent interests among the people and to use them to tie individuals together. The abilitiy adequately understand and appropriately interprete responses of the audiences, to present the idea with confidence – that is art which is to be learnt!
