War is a highly debatable topic that has been used as main ideas for poetry many times. An idea that is important in Jessie Pope’s “who’s for the game” is that men should fight to defend their country in war. An idea that is important in Wilfred Owen’s “dulce et decorum est. ” is that the reality of war is brutal and scary. The language techniques that were used to show these ideas are metaphor, similes and personification. An idea that is important in “Who’s for the game” by Jessie Pope is that men should fight to defend their country in war.

This is shown with the language technique of a metaphor. An example being “And who wants a seat in the stand? ” The use of the metaphor shows the reader that if they don’t join in and fight in the war, they are missing out and will regret it by comparing not enlisting to being in the stands, which makes them seem uninvolved and a coward. This helps to influence men to join in the war because they feel like they don’t want to miss out and be on the sidelines while everyone else is in on the action.

The idea that men should fight to defend their country in war is important because without men providing protection their country would be ambushed and taken advantage of and its makes us realise that without soldiers our country could be a very different place. An idea that is important in ‘dulce et decorum est. ” by Wilfred Owen is that the reality of war is brutal and scary. This is shown with the language technique of a simile.

An example being “Bent double, like old beggars under sacks” The use of the simile shows the reader that the soldiers have become tired and worn down so much that they can hardly move by comparing them to old beggars who are hunched over and in really awful shape. This shows that war takes healthy young men’s bodies and makes them drained and exhausted. The idea that the reality of war is brutal and scary is important because it shows how soldiers are affected when they go into war and makes us realise that war is dangerous and terrifying place for men to be and it’s not safe for them to be there.

Personification is used in both poems to show an idea that is important but it is the idea in DEDE that is the most important idea to learn. In WFTG the idea shown is that men should fight and defend their country in war. This is shown with the technique of personification an example being WWGTCAH? The use of this technique helps the reader see the country as something that needs to be protected and defended by comparing it to a woman who are considered weaker than men and in need of security.

This made the men directed at by the poem feel more accountable for the safety of their country. In DEDE personification is used to show the idea that the reality of war is brutal and scary. An example being DS. The use of personification makes the shells come to life with the human quality of being disappointed and shows that they are frustrated or sad that they didn’t do what they were meant to do, hit their desired target. This shows how frightening and unpredictable the war is because the weapons are even against them and they are the target of even the weapons around them. Even though both ideas are important, the idea in DEDE is more important because is shows that war is brutal and scary by showing that men’s bodies are distorted and transformed to exhausted frames and that they are constantly targets of weapons and destruction which makes us realise that the affects war is having on soldiers are to high for the results obtained. The ideas of war are important because it shows us what life was like for people involved in the war and how they were affected.

The idea shown in DEDE is more important though because it teaches people how men are affected physically and the surrounds that they are trapped inside. I think its important that the truth about how brutal and scary war is heard because its causing trauma and pain in the soldiers themselves and the people in their lives, which should always be avoided and reduced. It shows that war is a negative answer to any arguments or conflicting ideas and a new solution needs to be used, which could prevent anymore people being affected so badly.
